As we head into our next round of fixtures and the “busy” end of the season, it’s a great time to reflect on what makes our club such a fantastic place.
However, we want to ensure that this passion remains positive. Lately, there has been a noticeable uptick in heated sideline comments and actions across the grassroots sport, and Actonians RFC want to be proactive in setting the right standard for our club.
Why This Matters
Rugby is built on the foundation of Respect. Whether we win or lose, how we carry ourselves on the sideline reflects directly on our players and our club’s reputation.
• Protect the Match Officials: Without referees, there is no game, Simple! They are human, they will make mistakes, and they deserve our courtesy. Abuse of officials is never acceptable and may result in club sanctions. A throwaway comment aimed at an official, which you thought was funny, could end up with a points deduction and you facing a ban from the club if called for.
• Support the Players: Our players (and the opposition) are out there for the love of the game. Constant criticism or "sideline coaching" from the fence often creates unnecessary pressure and takes the fun out of the sport.
• Stay Behind the Lines A huge thank you to the volunteers who help rope off our pitch every match day—we know it is a big task. This boundary exists for a reason: it gives the Touch Judges the room they need to do their jobs effectively. Please stay behind the ropes so they can focus on the game without having to navigate around spectators.
Our Sideline Code
1. Cheer for our team, not against the others. Don’t be that club..
2. Respect the referee’s whistle, even if you disagree with the call.
3. Appreciate good play from both sides.
4. Keep it positive. If you have not got anything constructive to shout, a clap goes a long way.
We are all here because we love Rugby. Let us make sure the atmosphere at our club is one where everyone—players, refs, and families—feels welcome and safe and equally when we travel, we show the same respect and values.
Best Regards
Actonians RFC Committee
